This is not so much a review, everything has already been said in the other postings, but rather my experience with this movie and look, I'm probably old enough to be the grandfather of most of the people submitting reviews to this movie. I am not into the teen age drivel that seems to be everywhere you look these days but .....I first heard about the story when the book came out. It seemed you couldn't turn around without hearing it being discussed everywhere. The enormous hype made me mildly curious, but not so curious that I wanted to read the book. Fast forward several years the book had been out, the movie hade been out, the DVD had been out and only then did I accidentally stumble across the DVD at the library. I could check it out for free and if I didn't like it I could turn it off after ten minutes ... so, why not?I immediately found myself captivated by the beautiful cinematography and background theme and despite the over-the-top and ridiculous costumes and makeup of the people in The Capitol I decided to continue watching. I was drawn deeper and deeper into the story and the characters and after about a fourth of the way through I knew I was hooked. The acting, starting with Jennifer Lawrence, was exceptionally good. I have to go through about 25 movies before I find one that I can say I absolutely loved ... this was a finish my story unbelievably, when I returned the DVD to the library, on a table in the lobby of the library where they sold used books cheaply, I found a mint condition copy of the book the big paperback format for fifty cents. I grabbed it. I began reading the book when I got home and couldn't put it down even though I already knew the story. Collins' writing style was as captivating as her story and the very few differences between the movie and the book were not worth mentioning. Actually, I thought the movie version of the ending was better just couldn't imagine Rue as a werewolf.I now own, and have seen and read, all of the books and movies of the franchise and consider them among some of the best entertainment of my life. SO it seems the old adage is wrong because you really CAN teach an old dog new tricks. Other young adult movies came out after 'The Hunger Games' which tried to capitalize on the same type of theme and they, by comparison, have failed miserably in my estimation.

This movie is a great start into "The Hunger Games" quadrilogy. And I do look forward to seeing "Catching Fire". I would recommend this movie to anyone who does enjoy sci-fi movies. I give "The Hunger Games" a Super Reviewer May 09, 2014 Weird movie. Seems to be about the exploitation of young people for public entertainment. Meanwhile, the film features an up-and-coming starlet as the heroine Jennifer Lawrence, and she's becoming a fixture of Hollywood entertainment in her own right. All the scenes in the film look very anodyne and clear; even dirty people, dirty rooms, dirty floors look like something clean trying to look dirty. Violence is rampant throughout the movie but it's softened by soft focus and overlaid by orchestral music suggesting that while yes this is a lot of violence for a PG-13, nobody involved with this motion picture condones it, and anyway isn't it nice that we cut away right before a young boy's neck is snapped? The film's heroine, by the way, who is fighting for survival, makes her first kill in the film and shows no remorse, as I imagine a young woman in her situation, I, or almost anyone on the planet who is not a sociopath would. Nobody seems to be too torn up that they are killing other children and young adults. That said, the movie is slick and flashy, and I'm sure the rest of the films will continue to attract a lot of attention. Super Reviewer Mar 27, 2014 Elevated by a tremendous second half. I thought it would be just a version of Battle Royale, but there was much more entertainment in store than my expectations. The movie starts with a girl fearing to be chosen as a participant in The Hunger Games, and her nightmare turns real. But she has a brave elder sister willing to volunteer and save her sister from the probable negative consequences. Then begins the promotion of the game and the training, et al. It wasn't anything extraordinary, but the chemistry forming between Katniss and Peeta draws attention and keeps it going. Finally, I didn't find the game much exciting except for the very ending.
